English 15th Century Two-Handed Sword
Have you ever seen a large, elegant sword that took your breath away? If so, you have probably come across the replica of the 15th century two-handed sword, example IX.1787 from the Royal Armouries Collection’s impressive collection of edged weapons. This type of sword, although large in size, is an attractive piece that is believed to have been found at an excavation in France, near the site of the Battle of Castillon. It was acquired by the Royal Armouries Collection in 1978 and has become part of a significant archaeological collection of over eighty swords associated with Castillon found near the river.
This English-style two-handed sword, though it may also be of French origin, is proportioned very similar to typical one-and-a-half-handed swords of the period. It also features a fishtail-shaped pommel, a straight guard with a domed fin, and a double-edged blade with a flattened diamond cross-section. The versatile cutting and thrusting blade is one of the reasons why these types of swords were increasingly used as specialist weapons in the second half of the 15th century.
The 15th century two-handed sword laid the foundation for the massive two-handed swords of the following century, such as the Swiss Zweihander and the Landsknecht Flamberge. This sword would have been in use during the later years of the Hundred Years' War and swords like this were carried throughout the Wars of the Roses and into the early Tudor era. It is a huge and imposing sword, majestic even, but it moves surprisingly quickly, due to the length of the hilt, the weight distribution and the distal taper. A sword like this would not be a secondary weapon but a primary competitor against spears and halberds.
Are you interested in purchasing this magnificent sword? Windlass Steelcrafts® has created a replica of the 15th century two-handed sword and has used a superior 1080 high carbon steel blade hand forged by an expert swordsmith to achieve proper weight distribution with a distal taper. Additionally, the scabbard has been made to replicate one from the period, with a wooden body and leather covering. The tip of the scabbard is reinforced with a brass ferrule and the leather extends up and covers part of the guard at the mouth of the scabbard.
