Reproduction of a 1st century Germanic shield hilt after a find in Empel (Holland), where it was located together with shield edge fittings and humps .
The shield may have had a religious significance, because Empel was a sacred place of the Germanic Batavians. There was a temple there where they paid homage to their god Donar (Skandian Thor , Latin Hercules Magusanus ).
