Since birth, 15-year-old student Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see spirits. One day he encounters the Shinigami Rukia Kuchiki who is hunting a Hollow, an evil soul, and has been injured. Ichigo complies with her request to take up her sword and fight the Hollow when he himself transforms into a Shinigami. Having no idea of the adventures that await him, he befriends Rukia and fights alongside her until her stepbrother takes her back to Soul Society to face disciplinary measures.
