Sword Art Online is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that is played with the help of Full Dive technology "NerveGear", which allows a person to upload their consciousness into the game. Kirigaya Kazuto, as his alter ego "Kirito", has been playing the game since its beta phase. When the game is made available to the public, 10,000 players are given the chance to use this innovative technology and play SAO. After some time in the game, all players are teleported back to the starting point to receive the news from the developer that anyone who dies in the game will die in real life. Asuna is a pleasant and helpful young girl, who like Kirito, doesn't want to leave people behind when they are in trouble. She takes the game very seriously and is focused on reaching the end before Kirito explains that she can enjoy the world of SAO as well. She often gets carried away by her feelings, which becomes especially clear when she throws herself in front of Heathcliff's attack to protect Kirito, and appears to die doing so. She has a hard time dealing with the deaths of other players.
