Gothic floating discs, 15th century, pair 1064000112

The discs are made of approx. 1.2 mm thick steel. They are equipped with a leather strap on the back and can therefore be attached to plate armour or chain mail. The front is decorated with forged leaves typical of the time and has a pointed spine, because at that time the discs themselves could also be useful as weapons.

The increasing effectiveness of offensive weapons increased the need for protection. So they tried to close the vulnerable gaps between the armor plates as best as possible. The floating discs of Gothic armor were decorative, but served above all to protect the armpits and upper arms during high blows and/or strikes.
