In the late Middle Ages and especially in the Renaissance, the parry dagger or fencing dagger, which was used primarily as a side weapon, enjoyed great popularity. As a rule, it was carried in the left hand (hence the term left-handed dagger , left-handed or gauche principal – French for "left hand") and was used in conjunction with a main weapon – sword, or rapier or epee – for an ambidextrous fighting style.
With its distinctive guard bar, which provided protection for the lead hand and appeared in many different variations (straight, S-shaped, bent downwards, sometimes with an additional ring or stitch blade), this second weapon was primarily used for defense and was designed to parry, deflect, block or pinch enemy blades in close combat. But it was also effective in attack and quite capable of stabbing an opponent.
Elaborate and richly decorated daggers also served as an elegant display of their bearer's wealth, and were often carried demonstratively by knights and wealthy citizens as a status symbol.
Although the inexpensive display fighting dagger we offer here is not an exact replica of a historical original, it has the typical features of a traditional Renaissance parry dagger. The unsharpened full blade made of EN45 spring steel has been hardened, tempered to approx. 48 HRC, and is screwed to the (invisible) knob. A wide hollow groove runs in the middle over about half its length. The handguard consists of a four-sided handle section with a wooden core and black leather cover, which is framed by a socket knob and a strong, approx. 12 cm wide hand guard made of steel. The guard piece bent towards the blade is closed with conical-shaped, tapered ends.
This beautiful stabbing weapon is delivered with a stable scabbard (approx. 3 mm thick) carefully sewn made of brown, vegetable tanned leather with belt loop.
With its approx. 1.5mm / 2mm thick blunt cutting edges and rounded tip, this left-handed dagger is ideal for reenactment, light show fighting or sparring. Of course, it is also ideal as a collector's item, decorative object or prop, eB to complete your costume.
