The drinking horn, made primarily from cow or goat horn, was a popular drinking vessel in many cultures and through many eras, being particularly important in ceremonies. It remained in use until the early modern period, especially in the Germanic-influenced areas of Europe. Especially in Scandinavia it enjoyed great popularity in the early Middle Ages. The drinking horn is mentioned in both the Prose Edda and the Lieder Edda.
Although Viking Age horn fragments are rarely found during archaeological excavations, the number of surviving metal horn mouth plates and tips suggests that their use was far more widespread than actual horn finds suggest.
The drinking horn offered here is handmade.
with buffalo horn and polished from the outside for a smooth and shiny surface. It is decorated with a brass and lace border and comes with a black lacquered metal stand with non-slip rubber feet.
Whether during solemn rituals or lavish parties, this real eye-catcher will make
Any medieval or Viking Age landscape looks even more authentic. The horn is not only ideal for reenactment purposes, but also very decorative in the modern home and can be a great gift idea. Please note that the inside of the horn is not sealed in a food-safe manner.
To enjoy your favorite wine/mead (or beer) to the fullest, you may want to consider painting or sealing the interior. Using melted beeswax, for example, is a traditional sealing method.
Drinking horns are not dishwasher safe and should be cleaned
thoroughly with lukewarm water and a soft cloth before first (and after each) use. To protect the material from damage, aggressive cleaning agents should be avoided at all costs.
