This medieval long dress made of solid cotton fabric (canvas) is fitted. In the skirt part, so-called geren (fabric wedges ) are used, which create a generous hemacora width. The front center is laced with a strong cotton ribbon, so that the women's dress can be individually adapted to the body. Thanks to the nested tips at both ends, the ribbon can be easily pulled through the embroidered eyelets. In order to keep the dress as authentic as possible,
A drawstring was deliberately used here, even if this is much slower to put on than a zipper. The cut of the dress is based on medieval depictions from the 13th to 15th century. Whereas women's tunics before this time were rather loose and concealed the shapes of the body, clothing was now becoming increasingly body-oriented. This body-hugging cut probably owes its name to the Cotehardie (in German cotte = more or less bold), which originally originated in France from the loose Cotte.
Typical of a cotehardie are the cords
or buttons down the centre front. These only emerged at this time and eventually made a tight fit possible. The ever wider neckline was also characteristic of these dresses and very popular with ladies in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The cotehardie was usually combined with an undergarment, a veil and a narrow belt. A short-sleeved cotehardie also liked to wear lapel sleeves, which were attached to the sleeve knuckle with a needle.
Depictions of a cotehardia from the period can be found, for example, on the June calendar sheet of the Book of Hours of the Duke of Berry, a French illuminated manuscript (original title: Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry), or in the Book of Simple Medicine (Virgin and Unicorn), illustrated by Robinet Testard, both from the 14th century.
