The Roman military cincture was a leather belt with decorative metal plates and often fitted with brackets or devices for hanging the soldier's dagger . This war belt was not only used to hold the warrior's braccae (trousers) during battle, but was also a symbol of military rank or honour.
The Roman cingulate offered here is a replica of a find from the fort at Rheingá¶nheim (Ludwigshafen), a former auxiliary camp on the banks of the Rhine, dating from the first half of the 1st century AD. Although the cingulate was often a leather apron of a plurality of narrow, decorated with strips of metal fittings (so-called Pteryges or Pteruges ) was one, it was not present on the original artefact.
The hinged buckle, the movable Pugio mounts and the decorative plates are all tinned brass. The belt itself is made of sturdy 3mm thick leather and is additionally lined on the inside with suede around the wearer's tunic to the rivets holding the metal plates. The sash is pre-cut and adjustable to a variety of sizes. A leather cord is included for tying and attaching a dagger to the button-shaped Pugio suspension.
