The Sutton Hoo archaeological site in East Anglia, England, includes numerous burial mounds, including the famous ship grave, from which remarkably well-preserved precious artefacts from the 7th century were recovered. The most famous finds from this grave are probably the Sutton Hoo helmet and the Great Gold Buckle , both important testimonies of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship.
For the ruling classes of the Anglo-Saxons and other Germanic peoples, the
Expensive and artistically decorated magnificent belts were indispensable as prestigious clothing accessories.
This sturdy belt is inspired by the
Original historical find from Sutton Hoo. The massive, elaborately crafted brass belt buckle is a detailed replica of the original gilded buckle from the ship grave, as can be admired in the British Museum in London. It consists of three parts: an elongated, somewhat ovate plate, a spine with a round plate, and a holder. The plate and the mandrel holder can be moved independently of each other. All components of the belt buckle are richly decorated: the adjustment plate is covered with animals or animal-like creatures, from writhing snakes to intertwined four-legged beasts and stylized bird heads, and is attached to the belt with three semicircular ornamental rivets. The snake-like decorations are repeated on the spine plate and the two adjustment plates attached to the belt, while the buckle bar is decorated with fine braided motifs.
The approximately 4cm wide and 3mm thick strap is made of
high quality cowhide and provided with 15 rectangular holes for a perfect fit.
This beautiful belt is sure to be a conversation at any market.
