This elegant medieval belt is named after Saint George (George of Lydda), a Greek-born Roman officer who served in the Praetorian Guard for the Emperor Diocletian and was executed in 303 AD for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Canonised as a saint in 494 AD, his veneration as a Great Martyr spread throughout the Middle East and Europe over the centuries. By the time of the Crusades (11th/12th c.), St George had become one of the most widely adored military saints. He was praised as a model of chivalry, and myths and legends surrounding his life and deeds (most popularly the legend of St George and the Dragon) continued to be passed down from generation to generation into the Middle Ages. High and late medieval depictions of him, often portrayed mounted on a white horse, are countless.
This approx. 4 cm wide belt is made of sturdy 2 mm leather.
thickness. It is fitted with a large buckle with the famous medieval iconography of St. George on his horse slaying the dragon with his lance. The belt is adorned with a series of alternating heraldic eagles and stylized fleurs-de-lis. All fittings are made of brass.
The strap is approx. 135 cm long and has no drilled holes.
The back of the buckle is fitted with a pin that anchors into the hole in the end prong. The prong comes unassembled and must be installed by the customer (hardware is included). This allows the user, if necessary, to adjust (cut) the belt to a comfortable, custom fit before mounting the prong. Alternatively, the belt can be pierced to accommodate the back pin, or simply worn "knotted" in true medieval style.
This leather belt is best suited to High and Late Medieval settings and particularly suited to the representation of a 13th or 14th century knight or nobleman.
This fine knight's belt is an elegant and authentic addition to any medieval outfit and an ideal accessory for medieval markets, reenactment events and LARP gatherings.
