The basin bell, also known as the kettle bell or bascinet , developed in the early 14th century from the so-called brain bell and was widespread throughout central Europe until the 15th century.
The late medieval basin bell we offer here is based on the helmet seen at Bannockburn on the famous bronze statue of Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329). After years of fighting the English crown, King Robert (commonly known as Robert the Bruce or Robert the Bruce ) defeated the army of Edward II of England in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn, a decisive battle which ultimately led to the restoration of Scottish independence. Alongside the legendary William Wallace, Robert the Bruce remains one of Scotland's most famous historical figures to this day.
This early 14th century basin bell is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel and decorated with a detailed riveted brass crown. To protect the neck and collar, the helmet has a chainmail sleeve down to the shoulders. The 4-in-1 chainmail consists of 1.6 mm thick, non-riveted round steel rings with an inner diameter of about 9 mm. A perforated leather strip about 4 cm wide is firmly sewn to the removable platter. Vervelles (small protruding anchor points or rivets with holes) attached and secured with a thin leather cord. The helmet can be removed or reattached at will.
The blackened interior is provided with a fine adjustable leather inlay, and the adjustable chin strap made of 3 mm thick brown leather is fitted with a brass buckle (with an antique finish).
This beautiful and wearable helmet is suitable for light display combat, reenactment, LARP, stage or TV/film and will make your transformation into a proud knight or noble king simply perfect. Of course, it is also an excellent addition to every helmet collector's treasure trove and is also a beautiful display or decorative object for all lovers of Scottish history.
