Burgundian teapot hat, 15th century, steel
1.6mm This late medieval helm is a reproduction of a late 15th century Burgundian kettle hat war bonnet, modelled after original artefacts (one of which is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York). Its particular appeal lies in its simple yet attractive design and its fluted bowl which makes it stand out from the crowd.
Worn by foot soldiers, archers, crossbowmen, pikemen and men-at-arms throughout Europe in the Early and Late Middle Ages, this rather simple, wide-brimmed hat-shaped helmet owes its name to its resemblance to a cooking pot (originally called a kettle).
Although teapot hats existed in many variations, they all shared the same main feature: a wide brim that offered good protection, not only against downward sword blows, but also against hails of arrows or other projectiles fired or thrown from above. This highly protective design, which, moreover, did not impair the wearer's sight, hearing, or breathing, proved useful during sieges and massed infantry battles, and contributed greatly to the enduring popularity of this type of helmet.
The reconstruction we offer here is made of 1.6 mm steel (16 gauge) and is therefore only suitable to a limited extent for combat reenactment. The blackened interior is equipped with a riveted suspension lining made of leather and the adjustable 3 mm thick leather strap is closed with an antique brass buckle.
Suitable for light combat reenactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, this fine and fully wearable helmet will make your transformation into a proud medieval warrior simply perfect. Of course, it will also make a great addition to any helmet collector's treasure chamber.
