This Celtic/Gallic helmet is based on surviving original specimens, the most famous of which is probably the Port bei Nidau iron helmet, an almost entirely preserved river find from the Zhil that was recovered at the end of the 19th century in the village called Port (near Nidau, Switzerland). It dates to the 1st century BC. The original artifact dating to the 2nd century BC is classified as a late helmet of the La Tá¨ne period (also known as La Tá¨ne III or La Tá¨ne D ).
The port helmet type comes from Eastern Gaul. The traits that identified it were the round cap, the riveted and protruding neck protection, the raised brow ridges and the cheek flaps. Although this helmet is clearly of Celtic origin and was worn by Gallic warriors, it is believed to have also been used in the Roman ranks in Caesar's Gallic Wars (58-50 BC). This particular form of the helmet was eventually adopted by the Romans and eventually developed into the so-called Imperial Gallic Weisenau type , the Roman legionary helmet, which is considered a classic.
This reconstruction of a Gallic Port-type helmet with movable flaps is made of 1.2 mm steel. The pronounced neck protection is attached to the helmet bowl with five round rivets. Since the helmet has no built-in lining, the delivery includes a cotton-padded hood, making it comfortable to wear. Small rings on the inside of the cheek flaps also offer the option of attaching a chin strap.
