The addition of face protection to helmets is logical. In particular, there are several examples in the art of helmets with conical bald heads and wide-visored faceplates, as is the case here.
This particular one is based on the one found in the magnificent Romanesque portico of the church of Santa María la Real, in Sanguessa (Navarra). On the outer archivolt you can see the professions typical of medieval society, including two armed men. One of them wearing a helmet like the one shown here, with a wide visor, almost up to the cheeks. Other very similar ones can be seen represented in some codices from the same period. It has a historical helmet design with attached face protector.
