This buttoned velvet hood is made of cotton velvet (100% cotton) and lined with a light cotton fabric. The hood ends in a long point (also called a liripipe ) and is cut extra wide around the face so that it can be turned up or pulled deep into the face as needed. The gugel is closed with small ball buttons, so that the woman would not ruin her hair style while dressing and undressing. Usually only one or two buttons were closed at the collar, or the gugel was worn completely open.
This buttoned headdress dates back to the late Middle Ages and was only worn by women in this variant. Numerous depictions from the period show that this type of hood was part of everyday clothing and was often worn at work.
In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the wearing of a veil was obligatory for married women. The phrase come under the hood is derived from this custom.
As for velvet, it can be added that it appeared in the Mediterranean region in the 14th century and was woven mainly in Italy. The elaborate design made velvet an exclusive item.
Details:
- Available sizes: One size
- Available colors: black, red
- Material: 100% cotton (velvet)
- Care instructions:
Cotton velvet should not be put in the washing machine, as velvet wrinkles irreversibly. Velvet should also not be ironed, as this would cause the pile to lose its depth. We recommend brushing off light stains with a clothes brush. In the case of coarser dirt, we recommend that you hand the Gugel over to the cleaning department.
