The Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem has its origins around the year 1070, when a group of Italian merchants built a hospital in Jerusalem to care for pilgrims.
As the popularity of the Templars grew, the Hospitallers decided to change into warrior monks in order to obtain the donations that the military orders received, although they never abandoned their welfare and charity functions.
In 1306 they invaded the island of Rhodes and established their headquarters there. They later moved to the island of Malta, where they continued to maintain the independence of their state and became known as "The Knights of Malta".
