English naval cannon, 18th century
The development of artillery in the 15th century and its effectiveness on European battlefields led to a technological revolution and an arms race among continental powers. From the end of the 16th century, as land combat became more stalemate, the main powers tried more to find a solution through naval force and the improvement of their military techniques. It was during this period that the first national war fleets emerged, capable of prolonging the conflict at great distances from the mother country. In the following centuries it would become clear that those nations that could not supply themselves with thousands of cannons to arm their ships[1] would be relegated from the main maritime trade routes, leaving the leading role in the control of the oceans, the new main stage of confrontation, to other countries.
