This beautiful replica of a Viking Age brooch or fibula was made after an archaeological find from the 9th century. The original piece was found in Birka / Bjá¶rká¶, Sweden and can now be admired at the Historiska Museet in Stockholm.
This so-called lingual fibula is made of bronze. The motifs adorning the original artefact were reproduced as faithfully as possible. They show a tree flanked by two intertwined snake creatures. This scene is thought to be a depiction of the snakes Goin and Moin (also Góinn and Móinn ) gnawing at the roots of the ashen world Yggdrasil (Lieder-Edda). On the back of the garment clasp is a strong and sturdy bronze pin for attaching it to the garment .
Although tongue-shaped, flat fibulae from the Viking Age have rarely been found until today, they were probably part of Viking women's jewellery in addition to the better-known shell fibulae (also tortoise fibula or humpback fibula ) and canned fibulae . They were usually about 10 cm long and were paired to fasten the ruffled skirt or hanging skirt (skirt with straps or dress with straps) worn on the shoulders or used to fix capes and scarves. Sometimes these Viking brooches were also equipped with a ring or an eyelet, on which decorative pearl necklaces or even small everyday utensils (keys, scissors, etc.) could be hung (the article offered here is supplied without ring and eyelet).
This beautiful piece of jewelry is a fine example of Old Norse art that will make any early medieval garment look even more authentic.
