The PPSh-41 (Russian: Pistolet-Pulemyot Shpagin) was a submachine gun designed by Georgi Shpagin as a cheap and simplified alternative to the PPD-40 submachine gun. The PPSh-41 was a magazine-fed, recoil-operated, open-bolt-firing automatic submachine gun. It was one of the main light weapons of the Soviet armed forces during World War II. The total number of PPSh-41 submachine guns produced during World War II is estimated at over 6 million. It could be fed from a curved or drum magazine, chambered for the 7.62×25 Tokarev cartridge. The PPSh-41 was also widely used during the Korean War.
