Bucklers were small shields that were used in Europe from the 12th to the 17th century. Small in size, no wider than the fist holding it, the buckler was primarily used to parry an opponent's attack rather than protect the body from attack. It could also be used to block an opponent's weapons and even protect the sword hand to conceal its position. This made it difficult for the opponent to plan an attack and hindered their movement, thus facilitating fast fighting. The buckler became the ideal shield choice as weapon sizes began to decrease and fast fighting became popular due to the development of firearms.
This Buckler is made of 1.3mm thick steel (18 gauge) with a wooden handle. The buckler could be hung from the scabbard or sword belt when two hands were needed for a pike or staff weapon. So widespread was its use that sword and shield practice became one of the most common sports of the Renaissance.
