RAGNAR'S VIKING AXE 9TH CENTURY
Reproduction of an ornate axe, made of metal and wood.
The axe is undoubtedly the most characteristic weapon of Viking warriors; although there were different types of axes, the materials were always the same: wood for the handle and iron for the blade.
Initially, it was a tool for building ships, houses or chariots, but given its versatility, its use extended to the battlefield. Accompanied by a shield, the Viking axe was an especially devastating resource if the enemy did not have cavalry, or a large contingent of archers. The sight of Vikings handling this type of weapon provoked terror.
Ragnar Lodbrok was a legendary Viking king who reigned in the 9th century, in the territories of present-day Sweden and Denmark, and took part in numerous raids, both on the European continent and in the British Isles; he is remembered in Scandinavian tradition for being bloodthirsty, rebellious and having caused havoc with the handling of his axe in the territories of present-day England and France.
