The axe is almost as old as the mace. Metal axe heads were the first handicrafts made during the Copper Age. With all its history, it's easy to understand why a medieval warrior would choose a good axe for battle. This axe, from around 1100, has a spike that increases its effectiveness as a weapon of war. The steel head of this one-handed axe is fixed to a hardwood handle that is curved at the end.
