The Ertzaintza sabre is a defence tool and an essential part of the dress uniform used by the Basque Country's autonomous police force. This security force was created in 1982 to guarantee the security and protection of the Basque community, and its uniform is a representation of the history and tradition of the area.
The design of the sabre was inspired by the 19th century uniforms used by French troops, although its composition and colours have been adapted to the aesthetics of the Ertzaintza. The blade is slightly curved and is decorated with banners and floral motifs, as well as the inscriptions "ERTZAINA 1982" and the names of the provinces of Álava, Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, Lapurdi, Navarra and Zuberoa.
The sword's hilt is made of a bowl, which gives it an elegant and comfortable appearance. The uniform accessory includes a curved metal scabbard with two rings for attachment to the belt, making it easy to carry and access in case of emergency.
Measuring 105 cm (41 inches) in length, the sabre is a useful tool for protection and defence in dangerous situations, and has been used by the Ertzaintza as part of its equipment since its foundation. In addition to its practical use, it is a sign of pride and honour for members of the Basque Country's autonomous police force, and a symbol of the region's aesthetics and spirit.
