The original of this replica is a find from the archaeological site of Niederbieber, the remains of a Roman auxiliary-fort near the Upper German-Raetian Limes on the Wied, a tributary of the Rhein.Helme of this type was probably both infantry and cavalry during the 2.-3. Century n. Chr.
This type of helmet is particularly characterized by its all-round protection without significant impairment of hearing and field of vision. The generously cut cheek flaps cover the area of the temples, cheeks and chin, and are hooked together at the front by a pin. The helmet's bell itself is reinforced by upper ribs in its structure. The neck is protected by a separate 9 cm wide screen, as well as the forehead. The spikes at the corner points of the ribs, as well as on the front screen, probably had the purpose of distracting the opponent's blows.
