An elaborate reconstruction of a late Roman cavalry helmet that was excavated in Deurne, the Netherlands. The rich ornamentation suggests that the wearer was a very important officer. A Roman coin, also found next to the helmet, bears the date 319, so the helmet probably dates to the early 4th century.
The helmet dome is riveted together from six separate parts (clips). The cheek flaps are characterised by good mobility. The neck flap is fastened with two leather straps with buckles and can therefore be locked and even loosened. The helmet is hand-made from steel and brass and has a very comfortable Lederinlett. The nose, cheek and neck flaps are lined on the inside with red leather.
