The original of this magnificent helmet - or rather the fragments - were discovered in 1939 during the excavation of a ship's grave at Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge (Suffolk / England).
It is therefore very likely a grave supplement of an Anglo-Saxon prince and was probably produced between 750-775 AD. Historically, it is close to other early medieval Germanic helmets such as Vendel and Valsgá¤rde (Sweden).
The assembled original pieces are on display alongside an elaborate early reconstruction of the Royal Armouries at the British Museum in London.
This helmet is a very decorative but also wearable (literal) piece of early medieval armour. The helmet is lined on the inside with leather.
