This pistol was manufactured in St. Etienne by Jean-Baptiste Gribeauval in 1806 by express order of Emperor Napoleon I and bears his coat of arms on the grip.

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), Emperor of France from 1804 to 1815, consolidated and instituted many of the reforms of the French Revolution. He is considered one of the greatest military geniuses in history, conquering most of Europe and leading highly successful military campaigns, albeit with some equally resounding defeats.
