Lorica Segmentata Newstead Type – Latest Evolution of Roman Armor
This Lorica Segmentata Newstead Type is an authentic historical reconstruction , based on archaeological finds from the Roman camp Trimontium , located near Newstead, Scotland . It represents the latest evolution of the segmented armour used by the Roman army between 130 and 280 AD.
🛡️ Highlighted features:
- Robust material: Made of 1.3 mm thick steel and decorated with brass applications , which not only guarantee durability but also an authentic and elegant appearance.
- Historically Accurate Design: Based on remains found at the ancient Roman camp of Trimontium , this version accurately reflects the final evolution of the Lorica Segmentata before its gradual replacement by the Lorica Hamata .
- Fixed construction: Unlike previous versions such as the Corbridge or Kalkriese , the Newstead type is not adjustable , but is designed to perfectly fit a user with a chest circumference of up to 112 cm .
- Strategic Mounting: The four truss segments are connected by carefully designed hooks and push-in connections , ensuring stability and efficient weight distribution.
- Effective Coverage: Provides complete protection for the torso and shoulders , covering the most vulnerable areas without sacrificing mobility.
- Balanced Weight: With a total weight of approximately 9.2 kg , it offers efficient distribution to minimize fatigue during prolonged use.
⚔️ A Living Fragment of Roman History:
The Newstead Type Lorica Segmentata represents the pinnacle of Roman military engineering in terms of segmented armour. It was designed to offer optimal protection on the battlefield, whilst maintaining the flexibility needed to manoeuvre effectively in combat .
Key differences from previous versions:
- Non-adjustable: Unlike the Corbridge and Kalkriese types, the fit of this armor is predefined.
- More robust design: The segments are connected by hooks and more solid connections.
- Last evolutionary phase: After this version, the Roman army returned to the use of the Lorica Hamata (chain mail) .
