Small hand-forged Scottish knife with a decorated wooden handle. This traditional Scottish knife, also called a "Stocking Dagger" is worn on the right stocking, so only the top of the handle can be seen. It originally served ceremonial purposes.
Since the 18th century, the Sgian Dubh has been a staple of all Highland Scots. The name comes from Gaelic and means "black". It is unclear whether this refers only to the colours of the hilt, which was all black or dark brown in fact, or whether "hidden" is of greater significance or derived from "hidden".
