The term Damascus steel, Damascus or simply Damascus denotes a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, considered the ancient fortress and the source of Damaststahlerzeugung. Typically, a hard, high carbon and a soft, low carbon steel is repeatedly matched by forge welding and folding. The carbon steel provides greater hardness, better curing ability and longer edge retention, while the soft steel gives the blade greater elastitizá¤ty and a higher resistance to breaking. With this technique, the poor grades and changing of steel resulted in a time when in this way the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colorations in the varying carbon content also incur impressive pattern of the abwechslenden layers how zBverdreht when it is called. Torsionsdamast or Damascus rose .
