Sgian Dubh is a small hand forged Scottish knife with an embellished ebony handle. This traditional Scottish knife, also known as a "sock dagger" is worn on the right sock, so that only the top of the handle can be seen. Originally it served ceremonial purposes. Since the 18th century the Sgian Dubh is part of the basic equipment of every Highland Scot.
The name comes from Gaelic and means "black". It is unclear whether this refers only to the colours of the hilt, which were actually predominantly black, or whether "hidden" is derived from what it means, or "hidden".

The blade is made of 512 layers Damascus steel.

The term Damascus steel, Damascus or simply Damascus denotes a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, considered the ancient fortress and the source of Damaststahlerzeugung. Typically, a hard, high carbon and a soft, low carbon steel is repeatedly matched by forge welding and folding. The carbon steel provides greater hardness, better curing ability and longer edge retention, while the soft steel gives the blade greater elastitizá¤ty and a higher resistance to breaking. With this technique, the poor grades and changing of steel resulted in a time when in this way the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colorations in the varying carbon content also incur impressive pattern of the abwechslenden layers how zBverdreht when it is called. Torsionsdamast or Damascus rose . Among other things, because of these patterns, Damascus was endowed with an inherent magic in the Middle Ages. The Edda thus describes a Damascene shovel sword as a bloodworm, a poisonous snake.
