Katana Shirasaya John Lee

The John Lee Shirasaya Katana is a true work of art from Asian forging. This samurai sword is hand forged and is part of the renowned "John Lee" series.

Shirasaya is a specific type of mount for Japanese swords that is designed to ensure better preservation of the blade, especially in situations where the sword is not going to be used for a long time. The use of untreated magnolia wood in Shirasaya presents a number of advantages, such as its low acidity and the absence of other substances that can damage the blade. By not being treated afterwards, this wood absorbs the moisture from the sword and prevents it from rusting, which keeps the Katana dry and free of corrosion.

In general, the Shirasaya was carried with a signature ("Sayagaki") indicating relevant information about its origin, such as the place and time of its forging, the name of the smith or the appraiser. It is interesting to note that as a result of the Emperor's ban on the carrying of bladed weapons in the late 19th century, the ornaments and accessories including the hilt and tsuba were cut away from the swords, giving rise to the Shirasaya design as we know it today. In this way, the Shirasaya's resemblance to a wooden sword or a stick allowed its wielder to remain inconspicuous and carry the Katana with him.

In the specific case of the John Lee Shirasaya Katana, its blade is forged from 1045 carbon steel and is traditionally hand-hardened. The result? An exceptionally strong and durable blade. In addition, the sharpened blades feature a grooved channel with a Bo-Hi (full) edge, making them lighter and easier to handle.

The handle of the Katana is particularly long and is fixed to the hilt with two bamboo pins (mekugi), allowing the sword to be completely disassembled. In addition, the blade collars (Habaki) are made of metal, ensuring greater durability. Finally, it should be noted that both the hilt and the scabbard (Saya) are made of wood.

As for its measurements, the handle of the Katana Shirasaya John Lee has an approximate length of 28 cm, while the blade measures around 72.5 cm. The total length of the sword (without sheath) is about 100.5 cm, and its weight is approximately 940 grams.
