On February 14th, women take the initiative by giving chocolates to the men in their lives, whether in a romantic, professional, academic, or family setting. Therefore, there are even different types of chocolates depending on the relationship with that person and the message they wish to convey: • Giri Choco, “Mandatory Chocolates” or Gag Chocolates, for coworkers or schoolmates, the message is one of gratitude or friendship. • Tomo Choco, or "Chocolates for Friends," is especially for friends to enjoy. They are popular among the younger generation. • Honmei Choco, or "True Feelings Chocolates," are given as gifts to express love. Nowadays, homemade chocolates are preferred, as the person who makes them expresses their feelings. But while this day is for them to offer the gift, reciprocity occurs a month later, on March 14, during White Day. This day has become a celebration where men honor the women who have given them gifts, returning the gesture with a variety of surprises that go beyond just sweets. Origins of White Day White Day dates back to the 1960s, when the celebration of Valentine's Day began to gain popularity in Japan. Although it wasn't common for men to return the favor at first, the idea of giving a different kind of gift gained traction. In 1978, a confectionery shop called Ishimura Mansei-dō and the National Confectionery Industry Association celebrated the first White Day, marking the beginning of a tradition that continues to this day. The name "White Day" was chosen to evoke purity and innocence, characteristics that young people associate with love, although there are several stories that speak to the origin of the name: One says that it arose because what was advertised as a thank you gift for men was white chocolate, but another, more well-known one, suggests that a marshmallow manufacturer, inspired by an article about women's dissatisfaction with the gifts they received, decided to promote the idea that men should compensate women with sweets. Thus was born "Marshmallow Day," which evolved into "White Day." The Tradition of Gift Giving The tradition has grown so far that, on White Day, it could be said that men have a social responsibility to return Valentine's Day's gesture, and often, the gift is expected to be at least three times more valuable than the one received. So, instead of limiting themselves to chocolates, men can opt for jewelry, lingerie, flowers, or any other meaningful gift. This practice is based on the Japanese custom of " sanbai gaeshi ", which involves returning a gift of greater value.
