The return of one of the greatest icons of fantasy cinema

Since its first appearance on the big screen in 1954, Godzilla has become one of the most recognizable characters in fantasy cinema, starring in numerous films and captivating generations of viewers. That is why the announcement of a new installment has sparked great anticipation among its fans, who are eager to discover whether this adventure will manage to surprise them and maintain the appeal of a franchise that continues to attract interest worldwide.

    Release in Spain

Godzilla Minus Zero will arrive in Spanish cinemas on November 6, 2026, three days after its release in Japan, which is scheduled for November 3, a date known as Godzilla Day because it coincides with the anniversary of the monster's cinematic debut in 1954.

Distribution in Spain is handled by Version Digital.

    Everything about the production

Takashi Yamazaki returns to the helm of the film as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor, following the international recognition he earned with Godzilla Minus One (2023), which won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

The production, shot entirely in Japan, is handled by TOHO Studios and ROBOT, while the company Shirogumi is in charge of the visual effects.

Yamazaki's return maintains the creative continuity between the two films, while the new installment once again combines the spectacle of Godzilla with a story set in post-war Japan, where the consequences of the conflict continue to shape the lives of its inhabitants.

Technical innovations for Godzilla Minus Zero

The main innovation is that Godzilla Minus Zero becomes the first Japanese production shot using the Filmed for IMAX standard, for which IMAX-certified digital cameras were used, and the image and sound were optimized for the characteristics of these theaters. In addition, some sequences take advantage of the expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which allows for a taller image on compatible screens.

The decision to use this format is particularly relevant in a film in which Godzilla's dimensions and the destruction he causes take center stage.

The plot of Godzilla Minus Zero

The action takes place in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, when Japan has begun to recover from the devastation of World War II. However, the apparent peace does not last long: the monster was not completely destroyed, and a new threat once again puts the country in danger.

The story brings back Kōichi Shikishima and Noriko Ōishi, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, respectively, who return in this sequel alongside new characters, including Kanji Murakami, a biologist suffering from the psychological aftereffects of the war, and Makoto Aoyama, a meteorologist involved in disaster response.

The trailer shows a new operation to combat Godzilla, although it has not yet been revealed how the confrontation will unfold.

A sequel that must live up to Godzilla Minus One

With the return of the Shikishima family and the addition of specialists who must face the new crisis, Godzilla Minus Zero expands the story that began in 2023 and once again places Japan in the face of the consequences of a threat that seemed to be left behind, promising a great story worthy of its predecessor, although the final verdict will be up to those who go to see it.
