The Star Trek Anniversary: The Origin of an Annual Celebration

Every September 8, Star Trek fans celebrate Star Trek Day, a date linked to the birth of one of television's most recognized science fiction franchises, as it commemorates the premiere of Star Trek: The Original Series on September 8, 1966, when the episode "The Man Trap" first aired on American television.

With this in mind, the 2026 edition takes on a special dimension as it coincides with its 60th anniversary.

For 2026, Paramount and StarTrek.com have prepared an international schedule featuring fan activities, screenings, in-person experiences, television content, and initiatives related to scientific exploration.

Although anniversary celebrations will kick off on this day, they will continue for the rest of the year.

    Celebrations around the world

Many countries around the world have joined in the celebration of this 60th anniversary, both in Europe and America, with the date chosen for the commemoration varying in some cases. Among these, the following stand out, with dates around September 8:

    United States

Los Angeles will host an outdoor screening on September 8 at the Autry Museum of the American West. The program includes "The Man Trap," the episode that opened the original series, followed by an early screening of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as well as guests, food stalls, and activities for attendees.

The anniversary will also reach more than 750 American cinemas, where classic films restored in 4K will be screened alongside episodes of The Original Series.

The cinematic program will be completed with a marathon featuring the four existing films.

    United Kingdom

London will host one of the main European celebrations. The Science Museum will organize a special edition of "Star Trek Lates," featuring themed experiences, guest speakers on various topics, music, and activities for fans.

King's Cross St Pancras and South Kensington stations will have special decor on September 7 and 8 as part of a tour for fans of the franchise.

    Germany

Movie Park Germany will dedicate a full day to Star Trek on September 8. The program includes panels with German voice actors from Star Trek: Voyager and The Next Generation, contests, a session on the Klingon language, performances, cosplay, and an exhibition of costumes and artifacts from the franchise.

    Vulcan salute

    Global and Space Union

One of the most unique moments will be the global Vulcan salute, in which fans can participate from different locations via social media, live broadcasts, and fan-created content. The initiative will culminate in London with an official Guinness World Record attempt for the largest number of people simultaneously performing the Vulcan salute.

The celebration will also reach the International Space Station, where European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot will wear the captain's badge used by Anson Mount in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds during Star Trek Day. During this time, special content related to science, exploration, and the search for new frontiers will be released from orbit.

    Spain prepares its own events

In Spain, there are already two celebrations linked to the 60th anniversary of Star Trek planned for the coming months.

In Seville, the Star Trek Club of Seville will organize a Trek Day on September 12, 2026, at the Cortijo del Parque del Alamillo. The event will run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and will include screenings, collectibles, panel discussions, workshops, participatory activities, photos, and proposals related to the Trekkie universe.

Barcelona, for its part, will have another event on October 24 and 25, 2026, with a 60th-anniversary celebration linked to the Star Trek Club of Spain and activities planned at the Can Fabra Library.

The Spanish calendar will thus extend the international Star Trek celebration throughout September and October, with gatherings dedicated to fans and the franchise's six-decade legacy.
