FATHER'S DAY IS MARCH 19

Traditionally, Father's Day used to be a national holiday , but nowadays, communities have the power to decide whether to celebrate it as a public holiday or not . This year, March 19 will only be a public holiday in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia. Coinciding with the cremà of the Fallas, Saint Joseph's Day, March 19, falls on a Tuesday this 2024. For the rest of Spain, it will be a normal working day, although children will surely bring a gift to their parents at school.

Generally, when Father's Day falls on a Monday or Friday, some communities choose to declare it a holiday to create a short weekend, but this year will not be the case. When the date falls in the middle of the week, very few regions consider it a holiday, except those that celebrate other important festivities, such as the Valencian Community, immersed in the Fallas and whose patron saint is Saint Joseph.

In the past, March 19 used to be a religious holiday in Spain, just like Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Corpus Christi, Saint Peter's Day, the Ascension Day and Saint James the Apostle. However, with the arrival of democracy, Saint Joseph's Day was removed from the national calendar along with other religious holidays. Although the autonomous communities that wished to do so were allowed to keep it, this decision has generated complaints from the Falleros, who consider that it negatively affects tourism in the region.
