Viking Apron Dress, Overdress Tinna
Brown apron dresses were a core feature of Viking attire. The most characteristic features of these dresses were the shoulder straps and the simple tubular shape. Such dresses could be equipped with slits, so-called gores (wedge-shaped pieces of cloth attached) or pleats, and some variants also featured an overlapping front. They usually ended at mid-calf.
The Viking Age apron dress, also known as smokkr or hangerok (sometimes spelled hangeroc or hangerock ) served two different purposes. While the mullet variation was a kind of bib apron or pinafore designed to protect outside clothing, the more elaborate variation, adorned with braids, embroidery, chains and oval (tortoise) brooches, was worn as a status symbol. Historical evidence of this type of clothing is confirmed by finds and depictions from the archaeological sites of Hedeby and Birka.
Our plain slip-over dress is made from thick canvas fabric (100% cotton) and is therefore very durable. It has a loose fit, is tied at the sides and has been kept simple.
This apron dress looks best paired with a simple dress or shift and a belt. And when worn with matching accessories, it is perfect for portraying a Norse woman, maid, or shieldmaiden.

How to find the right size:
- To take your body measurements correctly in order to determine your clothing size, always wrap the measuring tape horizontally around your body at the fullest part.- For dresses, sizes are based on the circumference of your chest.
- If you are between two sizes, we recommend going up a size.
- Ease is included in the pattern and reflected in the finished measurements.
