What are Umbos?

Umbo is a protrusion or projection at the center of a shield. The umbo is designed to protect the shield bearer's hand from blows and cuts.

Umbos became popular in medieval Europe beginning in the 12th century. Early umbos were simple and round, but over time they became more elaborate and decorative. Umbos could be made from a variety of materials, including metal, wood, and bone.
