Spatha, late Roman sword with scabbard
This spatha is not a one-to-one replica of a historical role model, but a reconstruction based on original finds from the second and third century.
From the end of the 2nd century BC, the long Roman Spatha began to gradually replace the shorter Gladius. By the 3rd and 19th century, it had already become the standard weapon of the Imperial Roman legions and auxiliary troops and was also used by gladiators. The exact origin of the Spatha, as well as the reasons why it displaced the efficient and much feared Gladius so quickly in the Middle/Late Roman Empire, are still much discussed among historians, archaeologists and lovers of ancient Rome. Although it is often assumed that the spathae are of Celtic descent and their rapid popularity was due to the change in fighting techniques and military tactics in the Roman infantry and cavalry, the lack of reliable sources on this topic unfortunately often leads to assumptions and too many simplifications of a much more complex whole.
The Roman longsword we offer here has a broad double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel with two hollow grooves on each side and a field flaw about 5 cm long below the parer. The blades are not sharpened and the continuous blade rod is screwed to the end of the handle (brass threaded nut). The booklet with a generous knob is made of wood and provided with brass details. The handle area is decorated with carvings and the paring piece is equipped with a brass guard plate on the blade side.
The one-handed Roman sheath with wood/red leather is supplied with brass fittings: a mouth band, a circular place blade, a frame or a continuous side edge and a decorative central burr with integrated strap openwork for wearing on the belt or bandelier (max. belt width approx. 4.5 cm). The most striking feature of this sheath is obviously the above-average round plate or disc at the lower end (also called tin band ), which is artfully engraved with a rosette motif.
It should be noted that this Roman sword is not suitable for display combat. It is available as a collector's item or decorative object designed and also very suitable as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend taking care of the blade regularly, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil that is ideal for preserving steel products.
