Captain America is one of Marvel's most iconic superheroes, and his inseparable shield has become a universal symbol of protection, freedom, and justice. Over time, in both the comics and the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the shield has undergone changes in its design, material, and meaning. How Captain America got his shield, what versions have existed and much more: We'll tell you everything! The origin of Captain America's shield In the original Marvel comics, published in 1941, Steve Rogers receives his shield after being transformed into the super soldier "Captain America" thanks to the super soldier serum. Initially, their shield was triangular, similar to a medieval emblem. Shortly after, the iconic circular design we all know was introduced. According to canon, the shield was forged from a unique alloy of vibranium (mined in Wakanda) and steel, accidentally created by scientist Dr. Myron MacLain. This material makes it virtually indestructible. In the MCU, specifically in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), we see how Howard Stark (Tony Stark's father) gives Steve Rogers the round vibranium shield, replacing a more rudimentary metal one he used at the beginning. Variations of the shield over time Throughout the movies and comics, Captain America's shield has undergone several transformations, so we will list them below: The triangular shield Appearance : First comics (1941). Features : After Steve Rogers' retirement, Sam Wilson assumes the mantle of Captain America and inherits a new version of the shield, virtually identical to the previous one.
