In the universe of Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), demons are creatures that feed on humans and represent the dominant life form in the darkness of the night.

They are beings created from ancient humans transformed by the blood of the original demon, which grants them supernatural strength, regeneration, and virtually immortal life.

Their existence revolves around a single central figure: Muzan Kibutsuji.

    Muzan

    Muzan Kibutsuji: the First Demon

Muzan Kibutsuji was originally a sick, weak human destined for an early death.

During an experimental medical treatment, he received a medicine intended to cure him, but the process had an unexpected effect: his body stopped deteriorating and began to change irreversibly.

After this transformation, Muzan developed a new condition: his organism became immortal at a cellular level, capable of constant regeneration and adaptation. However, this new nature came at a price: the need to consume humans to survive and maintain his stability.

From this change, Muzan discovered a unique ability: he could transmit his own blood to other humans, causing a transformation in them that would give rise to what would be called Demons. This process allowed him to become the origin of the entire demonic species.

    Origin and transformation of demons

Knowing a little about Muzan, we can understand that demons in Demon Slayer are not born as such. They are humans who have been transformed by his blood. This process causes profound changes:

    • Partial loss of human memory
    • Extreme increase in strength and regeneration
    • Need to feed on humans
    • Physical adaptation of the body to inhuman forms

The transformation is not the same for everyone. Some retain fragments of their former identity, while others almost completely lose their humanity.

The more of Muzan's blood they receive, the more powerful they become, but also the more dependent on him.

    Demons' abilities and weaknesses

Demons possess a series of common abilities that make them extremely dangerous beings:

    • Accelerated regeneration: they can heal serious injuries in seconds
    • Superhuman strength: they far exceed human physical capacity
    • Partial immortality: they do not age normally
    • Body manipulation: some can change their shape or extend their body

However, they also have clear weaknesses:

    • Sunlight completely destroys them
    • Wounds caused by special swords can eliminate them if decapitation is achieved

These limitations define the balance of power within their world.

The Twelve Demon Moons: the demonic elite

The Twelve Demon Moons are the most powerful demons created directly by Muzan. They are divided into two groups:

    Upper Moons

They are the strongest demons in the world. They have received a larger amount of Muzan's blood, which significantly increases their power.

Their combat level places them at the top of the demonic hierarchy.

    Lower Moons

They are lower-ranking demons than the Upper Moons within the organization.

Although they possess superior abilities to common demons, they are weaker compared to the elite.

The classification does not depend on seniority, but on strength. The lower the assigned number within the Moons, the greater their power.

    Hierarchy and creation

The demonic structure is completely controlled by Muzan. He decides who becomes a demon, who receives more power, and who is part of the Demon Moons. This makes the entire system a direct extension of his will.

The demons in Demon Slayer are the direct result of the transformation initiated by Muzan Kibutsuji, a human turned into the first demonic being.

From him, an entire hierarchical species is created based on power, blood, and absolute control, where the Twelve Moons represent the pinnacle of his creation.
