    Historical Curiosities about Father's Day

Father's Day is a special celebration in which we honor those who have guided and protected us throughout our lives. Although it is celebrated in different ways around the world today, its history is full of interesting facts that few people know. Below, we share five interesting historical facts about this holiday.

Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages

While many believe Father's Day is a modern creation, the reality is that its celebration has roots in the Middle Ages. In many Catholic countries, the holiday was associated with Saint Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, whose feast day is celebrated on March 19. For this reason, in countries like Spain, Italy, and Portugal, Father's Day continues to be celebrated on that date.

The modern version was born in the United States

Father's Day as we know it today was promoted in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, an American woman who wanted to pay tribute to her father, a Civil War veteran who raised his children alone. Although the idea wasn't immediately officially recognized, it grew in popularity over time until 1972, when President Richard Nixon proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in the U.S.

Not all countries celebrate it in June.

Although in many parts of the world it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June, some countries observe different dates. For example, in Russia it is celebrated on February 23rd, coinciding with Defender of the Fatherland Day; in Germany it is celebrated on "Men's Day" (Vatertag), which coincides with Ascension Thursday; and in Spain it is celebrated on March 19th!

In Germany, Father's Day is celebrated with beer and walks.

Unlike other parts of the world where Father's Day is centered around family, in Germany men typically celebrate it with friends. The tradition, called Herrentag (Men's Day), includes outdoor excursions with wheelbarrows full of beer and food, a custom that dates back to the 18th century.
