Bokken was made of an extremely hard wood called kashi (white oak). These wooden swords are a viable solution to a vexing problem and are so effective that they are still used today. Authentic Japanese hardwood bokken are quite expensive. And a disadvantage is also that a wooden sword will rot or tear, it can come apart or splinter. Sooner or later it will become useless.

Cold Steel's solution was to develop a suitable replacement made of synthetic material, with an almost unbeatable price and very resistant to the elements.
