What is the difference between a crossbow and a bow?

Although they have the same firing principle, crossbows differ from bows in that the archer must manually maintain the draw of the bow by pulling the bowstring with their fingers, arm and back muscles and holding that same form to aim (which demands significant physical strength and endurance), while a crossbow uses a locking mechanism to maintain the draw, limiting the shooter's effort to just pulling the string to lock it and then releasing the shot by pressing a lever/trigger.
