The well-preserved Greek military helmet dates back to the 4th century BC. A bronze find was accidentally recovered from the Tigris River in Iraq in 1854. The original artifact, now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, is believed to have belonged to a cavalryman in Alexander the Great's Macedonian army.
The name of the Boeotian helmet is derived from the Greek region of Boiotia (or Boiotia), from where this type of helmet may have originated. This visorless helmet resembling a wide-brimmed felt hat called a Petasos was modeled after it was cast from a single piece of sheet bronze. The characteristic identifying features of this were the round (later conical) dome and the sloping, broad brim with the protruding front section and side folds. This special form of helmet proved to be ideal for mounted troops, because it provided adequate protection for the neck, face and sides without impairing the hoplites' vision and hearing. Although this helmet was primarily used by the Greeks and Macedonians in classical antiquity and in Hellenism, there is some evidence that it was also used in cavalry in the time of the Roman Republic.
The Boeotic helmet offered here is made from a 1.2 mm thick piece of brass. Since the helmet has no built-in lining, the delivery includes a cotton padded hood, which makes it comfortable to wear. This beautiful helmet is therefore ideal for reenactment purposes or for LARP, theatre, etc.
