The appearance and cut of this Gugel are based on an archaeological find that is dated between the 10th and 12th centuries. In 1936, a fully clothed corpse was discovered in a bog on the farm Skjoldehamn in Norway. To this day it has not been possible to clearly determine whether it is a woman or a man. The sharp hem at the chest and the inset square are characteristic of the hood worn by the corpse.

The cut of the Gugel offered here consists mainly of rectangles. It is provided with a small drawstring at the neck so that it can be individually adjusted. The hood is worn as a separate hood and only covers the shoulders. It is made of 100% cotton ( canvas or tarpaulin ) and is therefore not waterproof. However, with a little waterproofing spray, a certain water-repellent effect can be achieved.

If you take it exactly, the hood does not historically belong to the Viking era, but it is often used by both men and women to complete the Viking outfit. But this headdress is also a nice addition to all other costumes from the early High Middle Ages.
