Dark Drake Full Armor Set

Description

Intimidation. It is your primary form of weaponry when facing heroes, because it gives you total control. When your enemies fear you, they are more likely to make fatal mistakes.

Your Dark Drake Armor is as dark as your intentions, hardened by the evil magic provided by your subjects. As you draw your sword, assessing the trembling soldier who feels brave enough to face you, you begin to laugh. This will be a very brief fight, if it can even be called one. The little man hardly seems strong enough to hold his hammer.

DETAILS

This complete Dark Drake armor set includes Epic Armoury’s Dark Drake breastplate, pauldrons, upper leg protection, arm protection, leg protection, and Dark Warrior backplate to fully equip your costume needs at a lower cost. Each piece of armor is made of galvanized mild steel with rolled edges and premium leather straps and accessories, and is treated with Epic Armoury’s Epic Dark Metal coating to give the armor an antique, rugged finish. Built to withstand the abuse of a LARP or reenactment while keeping the wearer safe and comfortable, regular care of leather and metal armor will make this armor set last a long time.

Available in small, medium, and large sizes.

Breastplate

A finely sculpted piece of armor that protects the front of the torso, chest, and abdomen. Sculpted to fit the body and add structural strength to the steel, this galvanized steel piece has been decorated to mimic reptile scales. The plate rests on the hips and has a V-shaped ridge (or sword turner) that deflects blows from the weak point where the torso and leg armor meet.

Shoulders

A set of two pauldrons with spaulders, shoulder guards, and besagues. The pauldrons have four fluted metallic plates in the shape of scales, or lames, overlapping each other to provide laminated protection to the upper arms. Overlapping the pauldron is a large shoulder guard, which provides extra protection to the shoulder joint and armpits. The besagues (small round, convex metal shields) tied to the pauldrons with leather cords add extra protection to the armpits. The pauldrons are secured with leather straps around the bicep and on the shoulder blade, joining to a chest and back plate.

Upper Leg Protection

Tassets designed to protect the thigh and groin. The style is late medieval with metal plates with rolled edges overlapping each other. Two sets of steel plates hang from the hips to cover the outer thighs. A third set of thinner plates covers the groin area and provides some protection to the inner thighs. The set comes with a leather belt with hangers to hold the piece in place.

Arm Protection

A set of steel bracers designed to protect the forearms in combat. Rounded at the edges and decorated with scale-shaped ridges, these bracers are designed to sit comfortably on the forearm, extending from the elbow and tapering at the wrists. Secure this armor with a premium leather strap under the elbow and another above the wrist.

Leg Protection

A set of metal 'half-greaves' shaped to protect the shins. Rounded at the edges and decorated with scale-shaped ridges, these half-greaves are designed to sit comfortably on the shins and leave room for poleyns to cover the kneecaps. They reach from below the knee and taper around the ankles, secured with premium leather straps below the knee and another above the ankles.

Dark Warrior Backplate

A low-fantasy piece of armor that matches any Epic Armoury breastplate, protecting the back and spine. Sculpted to fit the body and add structural strength to the steel, this riveted steel piece has been polished to a high-gloss finish to attract elven and human knights in shining armor. On the bottom edge, the plate has a small ridge to deflect blows from the lower body.

Maintenance

Epic Armory Metal Works products should be treated with quality acid-free vegetable oil or wax and kept in a dry place. Metal armor that contains leather parts would need separate maintenance for the leather. Read the "Leather straps and accessories" section below for leather cleaning and maintenance with leather care products.

Degreasing and preparing your armor for use

When you open your armor, you may be overwhelmed by the smell of grease and oil. The oil has been applied to protect your armor during storage and transport. Use a degreasing product or mineral spirits and a dry cloth or paper towels to remove all oil from the plate armor pieces. It is a bit more difficult to remove all the oil from chainmail links, but it can be done in the same way. Wipe off as much as you can with a dry cloth, and with the remaining oil, you can remove the grease from the chainmail with mineral spirits or another solvent by spraying it onto the links. You can also choose to completely submerge your chainmail in a degreasing product and use your hands to agitate the metal in the solution; this will completely remove all oil and grease from your links. After removing the oil, make sure to dry the armor thoroughly. Strong, warm sunlight is great for drying your armor, but you can also use a hairdryer or a heat gun to speed up the process. Be careful not to overheat any leather parts when using a heat gun.

Cleaning

Moisture is the enemy of armor and chainmail. If your armor gets wet, it is important that you dry it thoroughly as soon as possible. After handling it, wearing it, or after six months of storage or display, all metal should be wiped down with a clean cloth. Lightly oil the clean surface with a quality acid-free vegetable oil. Alternatively, you can apply a coat of wax to the entire surface of the exposed metal. Let the wax dry for a couple of hours and then lightly buff it with a soft cloth.

Prevention and removal of rust

Store your armor in a dry place and check it every two months for signs of rust. If you find any, remove it by gently rubbing the affected spot with a lightly abrasive pad dampened in quality acid-free vegetable oil or wax. Epic Dark products are specially treated to resist rust, but they should still be treated with oil and stored in a dry place.

Leather straps and accessories

Clean them by removing dirt with a stiff brush, then gently rub with leather soap and a clean, damp cloth until the leather looks clean. Remove the soap with a separate damp cloth to clean off any soap residue and then use a dry cloth to wipe the remaining water from the leather.

You should always condition the leather after cleaning, as the soap will have stripped some of its natural oils. Treat the leather with mink oil, olive oil, or beeswax with a clean cloth, gently rubbing a small amount of oil or wax in circles into the leather. Let the leather soak in the oil before wiping it down with a final clean cloth to remove excess residue.
