The John Lee Gunto Katana is a Japanese military sword that features a design inspired by 19th century French military sabres. This sword aims to bring troops closer to the spirit of the Samurai code of honour (Bushido). Since 1934, it was decided to include a half-open Katana so that soldiers could carry a higher quality sword, as most industrially manufactured swords were of a very simple quality. On the other hand, high ranking military officers were often armed with traditional family heirloom designs.

The John Lee Gunto Katana features a Shinogi-Zukuri style blade. Beneath the ornate tsuba, there is a traditional locking button that can be used to draw the sword from its scabbard. The suit of this sword is brown, as is the cotton handle and lacquered scabbard.
