In this second part, we analyze the three highest-ranking Upper Moons: Akaza, Doma, and Kokushibo; characters who stand out not only for their strength but also for the conflicts, obsessions, and tragedies that marked their lives before and after becoming demons.
Akaza: Upper Moon 3
Akaza, whose human name was Hakuji, represents one of the most tragic cases among the Upper Moons.
Before becoming a demon, he was a young man marked by poverty and loss, which shaped his worldview and his obsession with strength.
After suffering a series of personal tragedies, he was transformed into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji, losing much of his conscious humanity. However, unlike other demons, Akaza retains emotional fragments of his past life, which directly influences his behavior.
His fighting style is based exclusively on close-quarters combat, even when using his demonic blood technique known as “Destructive Kill”. This style transforms his body into a fighting machine that combines speed, strength, and extreme precision.
Akaza possesses a unique technique: he can perceive his opponents' “fighting spirit,” which allows him to anticipate attacks even before they are executed. This makes him an extremely difficult opponent to surprise. Additionally, his regeneration ability is one of the fastest among the Upper Moons, allowing him to withstand severe damage and continue fighting without interruption.
However, his greatest weakness is internal; memories of his human life, especially those related to the loss of loved ones, interfere with his combat instincts. In critical moments, these repressed emotions can curb his aggression or alter his decisions.
Doma: Upper Moon 2
Doma is one of the most unsettling demons in Demon Slayer.
In his human life, he was the leader of a religious cult, which explains his charismatic but artificial behavior. After his transformation under the influence of Muzan Kibutsuji, he quickly rose to become the second Upper Moon.
His power is based on ice manipulation through his demonic blood.
Unlike other demons who rely on direct physical combat, Doma uses cold control to create structures, weapons, and large-scale attacks. He can even freeze the air around his opponents, slowing their movements until they are practically immobile.
One of his most notable techniques is the creation of large ice figures that act as extensions of his own power; these structures can attack, defend, or even trap enemies in enclosed areas.
However, what is most relevant about Doma is not his power, but his emotional emptiness. He feels no empathy, guilt, or attachment, which makes him an unpredictable adversary.
This total absence of emotions also causes him to constantly underestimate his enemies, considering them mere “objects of study.”
His behavior also leads him to act contradictorily: he can be kind one moment and extremely cruel the next, without any real emotional transition. This disconnect makes him one of the most psychologically dangerous demons.
Kokushibo: Upper Moon 1
Kokushibo, whose human name was Michikatsu Tsugikuni, is the most powerful demon among the Upper Moons and one of the oldest characters directly linked to the creation of breathing styles.
Before his transformation, he was an exceptional demon slayer and the twin brother of the legendary Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the only swordsman who managed to surpass Muzan Kibutsuji.
His human story is marked by frustration and envy.
Despite training for years and creating his own style, the Moon Breathing, he never managed to reach his brother's level. This internal conflict intensified when he discovered that the Demon Slayer Mark limited life to 25 years.
Faced with the fear of dying without ever surpassing Yoriichi, he agreed to become a demon.
As Kokushibo, his technique transforms into a hybrid art between sword and demonic biology. His body develops multiple eyes and an organic sword capable of generating crescent moon-shaped slashes. These attacks not only have a long reach but can also deform in the air, making any defense difficult.
Furthermore, Kokushibo possesses an extremely advanced combat perception, capable of reading muscular movements and anticipating attacks with precision.
His main conflict is not physical but psychological: his obsession with Yoriichi remains present even after centuries as a demon, affecting his stability in combat.
The Moons in the demonic universe
The Lower Moons and Upper Moons within Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba function as two levels within the same hierarchy created by Muzan Kibutsuji.
Both structures are not understood as independent groups, but as parts of the same power system where each rank defines the place of each demon within the established order.
