March 25th. International Tolkien Reading Day March 25 is International Tolkien Reading Day. This date was chosen because it marks the destruction of the Ring and the end of the Third Age in “The Lord of the Rings,” a very important work by Tolkien. Since its first celebration in 2003 by the Tolkien Society in England, International Reading Tolkien Day has been celebrated annually. Tolkien societies around the world usually mark the event on the weekend closest to 25 March. Elendil Sword Lowered! On this day, Tolkien fans gather to read excerpts from his books and celebrate his literary legacy. In Spain, for example, the Sociedad Tolkien Española usually organises various activities in different cities.
